At a time when Obamacare was forcing insurance premiums to rise with the increase in mandated benefits, UnitedHealthone was faced with the task of developing lower cost alternatives for the individual market.

First, the company developed individual products to address specific health expenses while keeping premium costs down: Accident SafeGuard for accidental injuries, Critical Life SafeGuard for a common critical diagnoses, and Hospital SafeGuard for inpatient hospital stays. The products were then combined with a health discount card under the name, SmartGuard.

The SmartGuard printed pieces worked as selling tools for brokers, first as individual pieces with a branded look, then as one combined piece tabbed by product. This design solution conveyed the idea that the products should be bundled together as more than just a broker trying to sell multiple products but as something the company believed in as well.
